Swearing, Birth, and the Power of Calm: Our Take at The Little Birth Company
At The Little Birth Company, we love honest conversations. And here’s one: both of us swear in everyday life. Sometimes, a well-placed swear word is the most real, authentic way to express ourselves!
In fact, research shows that swearing can increase pain tolerance and act as a healthy emotional release. During labour, the occasional spontaneous “Oh f***!” can actually help a woman release tension, let go, and move through a surge. It’s raw, it’s real — and it can be powerful.
But when it comes to preparing for birth, we believe there’s a different energy that better supports the physiology of labour.
The Physiology of Birth
For labour to progress smoothly, the body needs:
Oxytocin – the “love hormone” that helps contractions work effectively
Endorphins – the body’s natural pain relief
A sense of calm, safety, and connection
All of this depends on the nervous system being in a parasympathetic state — often called “rest, digest, and surrender.” This state is supported by what we might call feminine energy: softness, trust, openness, and flow.
These are the qualities that help a woman feel safe enough to let go — which is exactly what the body needs to do in labour.
Swearing in Context
Spontaneous swearing — in pain, in laughter, or as emotional release — can be deeply regulating. It’s embodied, honest, and sometimes exactly what’s needed in the moment.
But when it comes to preparing for birth, the overall energy is different. We aim to model calm, grounded, connected energy — because this is what best supports the body’s physiology in labour.
It’s not about never swearing. It’s about intention and balance. The energy behind our words matters.
Being Heard Without the Fight
We know how important it is for women to feel respected and listened to during birth. But that doesn’t mean stepping into “fight mode” or projecting anger.
In fact, advocacy can be incredibly powerful when it’s calm, clear, and grounded. You can stand strong without raising your voice.
Here are some powerful ways to advocate for yourself in birth:
Knowledge – Understanding your rights and options gives you quiet confidence
Clarity – Writing down your preferences and practising how to communicate them
Support – Having a birth partner, doula, or midwife who can speak up with you
Grounded Communication – Calmly repeating: “No, I don’t consent to that” or “I’d like more time to decide”
Presence – When a woman feels safe and connected, her presence alone commands respect
Our Approach
At The Little Birth Company, we’re all about empowerment rooted in calm and connection.
We’ll always encourage women to be real — and if a swear word escapes during labour, that’s absolutely fine! But in the lead-up to birth, we believe in modelling softness, presence, and grounded strength.
You don’t need to adopt a “badass vibe” to be powerful.
True power in birth comes from being deeply rooted in your body, supported by those around you, and anchored in the calm strength of your feminine energy.
Because when a woman feels safe enough to soften — that’s when she’s at her most powerful.
