Historically, hypnobirthing was a way of birthing. It was a belief that pain shouldn’t exisist during birth, that women are capable of birthing their babies without intervention and that breathing can work wonders. Traditionally, most women who wished to ‘do’ hypnobirthing, would birth at home, in water, without the use of medical analgesia. You would go into a deep state of hypnosis and birth your baby, with no issues. An ideal. Who wouldn’t want that? But what about when things aren’t as straight forward as this?
We won’t argue with the premise of hypnobirthing. The belief that being deeply relaxed, calm and confident in your knowledge and body, will support you in having a positive birth experience is undeniable. There is so much to be said for being in tune with your body. However, hypnobirthing has truly evolved into a modern practice, that encompasses so many wonderful tools and we would hate for anyone to miss out on this magic, purely because they didn’t think it was for them.
Hypnobirthing is a set of tools, techniques, information and totally revolutionary way of thinking. It isn’t a type of birth or promise to yourself that you will have a ‘natural’ birth at any cost. In fact, quite the opposite. All we are fussed about is ensuring you make decisions that are right for you, are treated with respect and have a sound understanding of what is going on. It is the internal thought processes that you are experiencing, which determine whether this birth is a positive or negative experience – NOT how your baby gets out and the path that is taken.
It is based on the theory that if we can reduce fear, we can reduce discomfort. That is science and logical, but hypnobirthing is not entirely pinned on this premise. Understanding biology and how your body is functioning can work wonders, but knowing how to truly relax and make informed decisions, whatever those may be, will be the absolute answer to all your birthing fears.
There is no rule book in hypnobirthing, you can do what you want, when you want, within reason.
Practice DOES make perfect, in terms of the breathing techniques and relaxations, but you need to take a step back and consider what you are trying to achieve here.
We hope that you will come away from our courses, hoping to achieve a positive, safe and informed birth experience. We realise that things don’t always go as we had ‘planned’ and being well equipped for that, just in case, is vital.
Hypnobirthing is for everyone. The way you use it is up to you, but the underpinning knowledge can change your life.
Has this cleared some things up for you? We do hope so!
