Labour Ward Waterbirth – 24hrs+ after waters releasing

7 Aug, 2025

Mum was hoping for a water birth on after a negative experience of being induced first time round resulting in an episiotomy too. She asked for some advice just before turning 39 weeks re membrane sweeps. We spoke about the pros and cons and I provided her with some research surrounding them. After our discussion, she made the decision to decline any offers of a sweep in the coming week. The day after our conversation, she had her ‘show’ (cue excited Jess!). Six days later, her waters released around 4pm on Thursday. The next day she went to the birth centre for blood tests to rule out infection, as her surges hadn’t started. We discussed the pros and cons of waiting for labour to begin naturally and ways to stimulate oxytocin. At 3pm on Friday (23hrs after waters releasing) a gem midwife ran her a bath with essential oils & I provided a meditation MP3 for her to listen to. That evening, her surges began! Surges came and went but weren’t as consistent as Mum had hoped overnight. In the early hours, she accepted the offer of synthetic oxytocin to help her surges in terms of consistency. She was moved to the labour ward…however, as she was informed on various types of monitoring, she opted for wireless and managed to secure the only room with a pool! Mum continued to labour in the pool until 12.15pm on the Saturday ,when her beautiful baby was born. She got the water birth she had dreamt of. Her words… ‘It was magical’

The power of being informed over a handful of exchanges with this Queen and she got the birth she longed for ♥️
